Whirlpool Cooktop C82 Error Code

VERIFIED

Error code C82
Appliance Cooktop

Whirlpool electric and radiant cooktops show C82 after the surface cooking area gets too hot. The cooktop then cuts itself off.

Start with the pan on the burner

Wrong-sized, empty or dry cookware can bring this code on. Wattage peaks when size, material and position are right, and the best pan has a smooth flat base, straight sides, a lid that fits well and a medium-to-heavy build.

  • The base diameter should match the surface cooking area.
  • A pan smaller than the area may fall short by no more than 1/2 inch (1.3 cm).
  • A pan larger than the area may reach past it by no more than 1/2 inch (1.3 cm).
  • A pan that is empty or has boiled dry should not stay on the heat.

Cool the unit, then restart

  1. Switch the oven off if it is on.
  2. Leave the cooktop alone for 5 minutes so the surface cools.
  3. Turn the cooktop on and verify that it operates.
  4. Should C82 return, turn the breaker(s) off for a minute, turn them on again, and monitor for one minute.

Look-alike overheat codes

C81 and C83 is the overheated-cooktop message for electric models, and E2 is a similar too-hot message worth comparing.

Cooktop repair and service around the Bay Area

A C82 that survives a pan check, a cool-down and a breaker reset calls for a technician visit to your Whirlpool cooktop in San Francisco. Phone (415) 687-4102 and say which pan size you used, the model number and the steps you have done. Related work is outlined on Whirlpool cooktop repair.

Model compatibility: Whirlpool reuses codes across series and model years, so C82 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
