Whirlpool Range Hoods

When the fan goes weak or the light goes dark, the cause is often a filter, a switch or the duct rather than the hood body.

At a glance

Overview

A range hood has a plain job: pull steam, grease and smoke up and away from the stove. In a San Francisco flat where windows stay shut against fog and wind, a hood that stops working shows up fast, as a hazy kitchen and a film on the cabinets. The problem is rarely dramatic; it is usually a light, a fan speed or a clogged filter.

The hood in our lineup

Our library lists the UXT4230ADS, a 30″ under-cabinet range hood listed at 225 CFM. An under-cabinet hood mounts to the bottom of an upper cabinet above the stove, and it either ducts to the outside or recirculates air through a filter. Whirlpool hoods are one piece of a kitchen that often includes a Whirlpool range or cooktop below, so a visit for one frequently touches the other.

Finding the model label

The label usually sits behind the metal grease filters, on the inside of the housing. Slide the filters out, then look along the inner wall or the top. Take a photo before you refit the filters.

What goes wrong

  • The light will not come on, flickers or burns out quickly.
  • The fan makes no sound on any speed.
  • The fan hums but turns slowly or draws weakly.
  • A vibration or rattle that grows with speed.
  • Grease drips from the filter edge or the housing.
  • A switch or button that clicks but changes nothing.

A note on codes

Our library has no code pages for hoods, and many hoods have no display. We work from what you can see and hear instead: which speeds work, whether the light is off, and whether the noise is steady or intermittent. If your hood is paired with an over-the-range microwave that does show a code, the microwave guide may be the better place to look.

Safe checks

  1. Make sure the hood is getting power; try the breaker and any wall switch that serves it.
  2. Remove the grease filters and wash them; a clogged filter weakens airflow noticeably.
  3. Check the light bulb is the type the hood needs and is seated properly.
  4. Look at the outside wall or roof cap, if it is visible, for debris or a stuck flap.
  5. Try each fan speed in turn and note which ones respond.

Do not climb on the stove or open the housing with the power on. If you smell burning or see sparks, turn the hood off at the breaker. If you smell gas, leave the home and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.

Ducting and installation

A hood that ducts outside depends on the length and bends of that run, and in older buildings the duct can be long, flattened or shared. A recirculating hood depends on its charcoal filter and its internal path. Both matter when we decide whether the fault is in the hood or around it, and we look at clearance to the stove and to the cabinet above.

What a visit looks at

We start with the simple causes: power to the hood, the switch, the bulb and the filters. After that we listen to the motor on each speed, check that the blower wheel spins freely and look at how the air leaves the housing. You get the findings and a written estimate before any part is ordered or fitted.

Booking

For a hood that has not responded to those checks, request Whirlpool range hood repair. We diagnose before repairing, send a written estimate and make no repair without your approval. A dark light is the usual start: range hood light not working goes through it in order.
