Whirlpool Dryers

Dryers in Bay Area flats and condos often push air through long, bent vent runs, which is where many heating and timing complaints begin.

At a glance

Overview

A dryer that takes two cycles to finish a load is rarely a dying machine at first. In San Francisco buildings the vent may run through a wall, up a chase and out a side of the building, and a lot of lint can gather along the way. Gas supply lines, shared closets and ventless setups add other variables. This guide describes the Whirlpool dryers we service and what you can check without opening anything.

Dryers in our library

The listed models are WGD5000DW, a 27″ top load gas dryer in the 7.0 cu ft series; GEW9200L, a Duet electric dryer; GGW9200L, a Duet gas dryer; and WED8500DW, a Cabrio electric dryer that is no longer sold new. All four are 27″ models. Our codes also cover compact heat pump dryers, HybridCare dryers and the dryer half of laundry towers.

Where the label is

Look inside the door opening on the frame or the edge of the drum opening, which is where the model label usually sits on a dryer. Some units carry a second label on the back panel. Open the door, photograph the label and keep the photo ready.

Why gas or electric changes things

An electric dryer that tumbles but does not heat points toward the heating circuit, a cut-off device or the power supply to the machine. A gas dryer adds the igniter, the gas valve and the flame sensing, plus the gas supply at the wall. We never ask owners to touch a gas fitting; if you smell gas, leave, use no switches and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.

Common complaints

No heat or weak heat

Clogged vents, a plugged lint screen, a heating part that is failing, or a power-supply problem can each be to blame. Whirlpool dryer not heating lays out what to try first.

Stops mid-cycle

Overheating from restricted airflow, a door circuit problem or a sensor that is reading incorrectly can end a cycle early. See Whirlpool dryer stops mid-cycle.

Thumping, squealing or scraping

A worn drum support, a roller or an idler can produce a rhythmic sound. Whirlpool dryer thumping noise covers what the different sounds suggest.

Door and start problems

If the dryer will not start with the door shut, the door switch or circuit is suspected. Our library lists dC as a door circuit failure and do as a run attempted with the door open, both for compact heat pump dryers.

Codes you may see

An AF display means restricted airflow, with the lint screen or vent clogged. F4E3 is also described as a restricted airflow code on some dryers, and L2 relates to low or no line voltage. For the full set see Whirlpool dryer error codes. Write the code down before you reset anything.

Vent run and layout

Vent length, the number of elbows, a crushed transition duct behind the machine and a flap on the outside hood that is stuck shut can all choke the airflow. Ventless dryers use a different approach and are cleaned differently, so tell us which kind you have. In stacked or closet laundry, the dryer sits so close to the wall that the duct may be pinched without anyone noticing.

What owners can check

  • Clean the lint screen after every load and look for a film on the screen mesh.
  • Check that the outside vent hood flap opens when the dryer runs.
  • Confirm the plug, breaker and, for gas models, that the gas valve handle is in its open position.
  • Pull the dryer forward only if there is room, and look for a kinked duct without disconnecting it.
  • Write down the code, and try one controlled power reset.

Do not open the cabinet, work on gas fittings or bypass the door switch. Hot lint with a burning smell means stop and switch off at the breaker.
