Whirlpool Cooktops

Electric, gas or induction, a cooktop that misbehaves has a short list of likely causes worth sorting out before anything is taken apart.

At a glance

Overview

A cooktop is the part of the kitchen people notice only when one burner goes quiet in the middle of dinner. In San Francisco that moment often happens in a narrow galley, a flat with a single shared outlet circuit, or a rental where the surface was installed years before the current tenant arrived. The Whirlpool cooktops we see fall into three kinds: radiant electric, gas, and induction, and each fails in its own way.

The cooktops in the lineup

Three cooktop models in our library show how wide the range is. The WCE97US6KS is an electric 36″ cooktop with a triple radiant element. The WCG97US6HS is a gas 36″ cooktop with a griddle. The WCI55US0JS is a 30″ induction cooktop. Those three cover the electric, gas and induction cases, and the approach to a visit changes with each.

Where to find the model label

The label is usually on the underside of the cooktop, which makes it hard to read once the unit is set into a counter. Check the manual, the original receipt or the paperwork a landlord keeps for the unit; the label is also sometimes visible from the cabinet below. If none of that works, tell us the size, the fuel and the control style, and we will confirm the number when we are at the unit.

What owners report most often

  • One radiant element stays cold while the others heat normally.
  • An element heats but will not shut off or keeps cycling.
  • Touch controls ignore a press, beep on their own or respond to the wrong zone.
  • A gas burner clicks without lighting, lights unevenly or drifts to a weak flame.
  • An induction zone refuses a pan that used to work, or switches itself off during cooking.
  • The whole surface goes dark and a letter-and-number code appears.

Reading a code on the display

Radiant and induction cooktops can show codes that start with C, E or F. Write the code down exactly as shown before you touch anything. A few of the meanings we have verified: C82 means the surface cooking area has overheated and the automatic shutoff was activated; F2 means the surface cooking area is too hot and clears once it has cooled; F8 means the surface cooking area has been in operation too long; F1E0 points to one or more keys being permanently pressed; E2 on an induction cooktop means the control panel switched off because the unit was too hot. Browse the full error code library for the rest. A gas cooktop does not announce itself this way, so with gas we work from the flame and the igniter.

Safe first steps

  1. Let the surface cool completely; several codes simply clear once heat drops.
  2. Look at the breaker for the cooktop and make sure it is fully on.
  3. Wipe spills from around the controls and burner caps with a damp cloth, keeping liquid out of the control area.
  4. On gas, check that the burner caps sit flat and that the shutoff valve under the counter is open.
  5. On induction, try a pan with a flat magnetic base that covers the zone marking.
  6. Perform one controlled power reset at the breaker, then try again.

Do not lift the glass, remove the panel or probe the wiring. If you smell gas, leave the home, switch nothing on or off, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. If you smell burning or see sparks, turn the cooktop off at the breaker.

Installation details that change the repair

A drop-in cooktop sits over a cutout, and the cabinet below may hold a drawer or an oven that limits how far we can reach. Gas units have a supply line and shutoff we only inspect from the outside, while electric and induction units tie into a dedicated circuit. In older San Francisco kitchens the counter may be tight against a wall, so tell us about any obstruction when you request a visit.

Next step

Our Whirlpool cooktop repair page explains how we diagnose and what a visit includes. We diagnose first, give a written estimate, and repair nothing until you approve it. For a failure that matches a symptom above, a glass cooktop element that will not heat has a step-by-step walk-through.
