Whirlpool Glass Cooktop Element Not Heating
When one surface element stays cold while the rest of a glass cooktop works, the cause is usually the element, its switch or a safety shutoff. Here is how to tell.

A smooth-top cooktop hides its heating elements under glass, so when one stops working there is nothing obvious to look at. The glass looks the same, the light may come on, and the pot simply never warms. The useful question is which of the elements is affected and how the cooktop behaves when you turn it on.
Sort the symptom first
- One element never heats, the others do: the element, its switch or its connection is at fault.
- A single element warms only part of the ring or only on some settings: the element or its limiter is wearing out.
- Nothing heats, display alive: a control or safety lockout.
- Nothing heats, display dark: the cooktop is not getting power.
- Element heats then cuts out: an overheat shutoff or a sensor reading too high.
Owner checks that are safe
Begin with the controls. Many glass cooktops have a control lock, and a child-lock setting can look exactly like a dead cooktop. Check for a lock indicator and release it according to your use guide. Then make sure the control knob or touch pad is set to a real heat level, not just a lit indicator.
Look at the cookware. A warped or very small pan sitting on a larger element can leave the surface sensor confused, and a dirty glass area under the pan can keep a sensor from reading properly. Wipe the glass with a soft damp cloth once it is cool and try again with a flat-bottomed pan matched to the ring.
Check the breaker. Cooktops run on a high-capacity circuit, and a breaker that has tripped halfway leaves the display alive but the elements cold. Switch it fully off, wait, then switch it on once. If it will not stay on, stop and book a visit.
Finally, note whether the element’s indicator light comes on. A lit indicator with a cold element tells a technician the control believes it is sending power. A dark indicator on an element that should be on points to the control or the switch.
What is usually behind a cold element
The element itself
A radiant element is a coil of resistance wire under the glass. It can open up with age or after a boil-over that cooled quickly against the glass. When it does, the element is dead while the rest of the cooktop is fine. A technician checks continuity with the power off before declaring it failed.
The infinite switch or touch control
Each element is fed through a control that decides how much heat to deliver. If the control sticks or burns out, the element may never receive power even though it is healthy. This is common when an element works on high but not on low.
The limiter and overheat protection
Elements include a protective limiter that cuts power if the surface gets too hot. A tired limiter can shut an element off prematurely, so the ring warms and then goes cold while you are cooking. Whirlpool’s published code list includes cooktop overheat entries; the entry for C81 and C83 says the cooktop has overheated, and C82 says the surface cooking area has overheated and the automatic shutoff was activated. If one of those shows, let the surface cool fully before testing again.
Induction is different
An induction cooktop has no glowing element, and it only heats compatible cookware. If an induction zone appears dead, first make sure the pan is suitable, centered and not warped. The published entry for E2 refers to an induction cooktop that is too hot, with the control panel switching off because of excessively high temperatures. In our library, WCI55US0JS is listed as an induction cooktop and WCE97US6KS as an electric triple radiant cooktop. Tell us which kind you have when you book.
Installation notes
Built-in cooktops in San Francisco kitchens often sit in a countertop cutout above a drawer or wall cabinet, and the space below is shallow. Cooling air has to move around the cooktop, so an item stored tight against the underside can keep it hot and trigger safety shutoffs. Keep stored items clear of the cutout area, and do not line the cabinet below with foil or liners.
What to tell us when you call
Say which element is affected by its position, front left or rear right for example, and whether it fails on every setting or only some. Mention if a code appeared, if the glass has any chips, and whether the cooktop shares a circuit with a wall oven. Landlords and property managers can send the same details along with the model label, which saves a second trip.
What not to do
- Do not lift the glass or reach beneath it.
- Do not keep using a cracked glass surface; moisture and spills can get to live parts.
- Do not place hot pans on a cold zone to test whether it warms.
- Do not scrape the glass with a metal blade while the surface is hot.
When to stop using the cooktop
If you see a crack in the glass, sparks, melted plastic or smell burning, switch the cooktop off at the breaker and do not use any element until it is looked at.

Frequently asked questions
Each element has its own control and wiring, so one can fail while the others work. The element, the switch or the limiter are the usual suspects.
Not always. It shows the control believes the element is on. A cold element under a lit indicator suggests the element or its connection is the problem.
No. Stop using it and switch it off at the breaker. A crack can let spills reach electrical parts.
It may be a safety shutoff reacting to heat. Let it cool and check the cookware and ventilation. If it keeps happening, book a diagnosis.
We diagnose first and explain what is wrong in a written estimate. Nothing is replaced until you approve it.
