Whirlpool Dryer Thumping Noise: What the Rhythm Is Telling You

A rhythmic thump, squeal or rumble while the drum turns is a sign that something rotating is worn, loose or out of shape. Listen first, then decide what is safe to check.

Whirlpool Dryer Thumping Noise: What the Rhythm Is Telling You

The dryer fills the apartment with a steady thump-thump-thump every time the drum turns. It might be new and faint or loud enough to annoy the downstairs neighbors. A noisy dryer is one of the most common reasons people ask for a repair, and a good number of those noises have a plain explanation.

The key idea is that the sound repeats with the rotation. The drum turns at a steady pace, so anything that is worn, flattened or loose on a rotating part creates a pattern that repeats. Listening carefully tells you more than guessing.

Rule out the load first

Start with the easiest cause. A heavy, wet item such as a sneaker, a bath rug or a bundle of towels hits the drum with every turn. Stop the dryer and take out anything unusual. Zippers, buttons, coins and belt buckles can also rattle. A thump that disappears with an empty drum is a laundry problem.

A flat spot after sitting

If the dryer thumps for the first few minutes and fades as the drum warms, a part that sat under load may have a temporary flat spot. Flat spots happen more when a dryer has not been used for a while. If the thump stays after warm-up, the cause is wear.

Worn support rollers or glides

The drum rests on rollers or glides at the back or the front, and they wear with years of use. A worn support produces a rumble or thump with each revolution, sometimes with a squeal. A technician looks at the rollers, the drum edges and the seals. You should not open the cabinet to find out.

The belt and idler pulley

Many dryers turn the drum with a belt held in tension by an idler pulley. A belt that has worn, or a pulley with a failing bearing, thumps or squeals. If the drum stops turning but you still hear the motor hum, the belt may have let go. Switch the dryer off. The cause is mechanical, and the repair needs the cabinet opened.

Motor and blower sounds

A motor or blower with a worn bearing makes a rumble or a high squeal that changes with speed. A burning smell paired with noise is a reason to switch off at the breaker and leave the dryer off. The library lists F7E1, a possible problem with the motor, control or wiring, and for laundry towers F7E6 for the motor circuit. These name places to look when a code appears together with the noise.

Level and placement

Check that the dryer stands level. Push on opposite corners of the top. If the dryer rocks, adjust the feet until it sits firmly. Vibration on a floor with some flex, as in many older San Francisco buildings, can make a normal noise sound much worse. A stacked or closet dryer picks up the sound through the walls.

Lint, objects and the vent

A restricted vent does not usually thump, but it can add to the noise because the blower strains. Clean the lint screen and look for lint buildup around the door. The library lists AF for restricted airflow with a clogged lint screen or vent. Our guide on a dryer stopping mid cycle explains how vents and noises sometimes overlap.

Describing the sound to a technician

Useful words are thump, squeal, rumble, scrape and click, along with when it happens. A thump once per turn suggests something flat or loose on the drum or its supports. A squeal that rises and falls with speed suggests a bearing or pulley. A scrape suggests something touching the drum edge. A click when a gas dryer lights is normal.

Record a short phone video of the sound with the dryer running, and note whether it changes when the drum is empty. That small step lets the visit start with a plan instead of a guess, and it saves a second trip.

Safe checks, in order

  • Empty the drum and run it for a minute; listen for the thump.
  • Check pockets and the drum for loose items.
  • Press on the dryer’s corners to test for rocking and adjust the feet.
  • Clean the lint screen and the visible duct behind the dryer.
  • Note when the sound happens: first minutes, all cycle, only on heat.

What not to do

Do not open the cabinet to find the noise. Belts and rollers are near live wiring and moving parts. Do not keep running a dryer that grinds, smells hot or throws sparks. Switch it off at the breaker. A gas dryer with a gas smell means leaving the home and calling the gas utility or 911 from outside.

Gas, electric and compact dryers

The sounds above are shared by gas and electric dryers, though a gas dryer may add a clicking or whooshing sound when the burner lights, which is normal and different from a thump. Ventless compact dryers sound different again. Our dryer repair service covers each type, and the Whirlpool dryers guide helps you find the model label.

Listed examples include the Cabrio electric WED8500DW, which is no longer sold new, the Duet electric GEW9200L and the gas WGD5000DW. Where a code appears with the noise, see our guide to dryer error codes.

When to book

Book if the thump continues with an empty drum, if the noise is a squeal or grind, if the drum stops turning, or if you smell burning. The visit starts with a diagnosis, a written estimate follows, and nothing is repaired without your approval.
