A top load washer that stops mid-cycle or leaves clothes soaked usually points to the lid lock, the drain or the load.
The WTW4855HW is a 27″ Whirlpool top load washer in our library. Top loaders are popular in San Francisco houses with a garage laundry corner and in shared building laundry rooms, where one machine serves many hands and loads vary a great deal. Our Whirlpool washer repair page describes the whole category.
A top load washer will not spin if it believes the lid is open. The lid switch or lock can wear, or something may catch the lid edge, such as a pile of laundry or a bottle. If the washer fills but never starts agitating, or stops with water in the tub, the lid is the first suspect. Read Whirlpool washer lid locked for how the lock behaves, and see the E4 entry, which our library describes as the lid opened during the spin cycle, and dLO, an item in the load keeping the lid from locking.
A tub that will not empty can be a blocked pump, a kinked drain hose behind the washer, or a standpipe stuffed with a hose pushed in too far. In a shared laundry room, someone else may have pushed or rotated the machine, bending the hose. See Whirlpool washer won’t drain. Your unit may also display E2, which our library describes as the washer still draining after 8 minutes.
Do not lean into the cabinet, open the back or reach beneath the tub. If water is spreading on the floor, close the supply valves and unplug the machine only if the plug and floor are dry.
We run the cycle, narrow down the cause and give you a written estimate. Nothing is repaired until you approve it. More lineup details are on the Whirlpool washers page.
On many top loaders it is under the lid, on the rim of the tub opening or on the cabinet near the hinge. Have it ready for the visit.
A lid that is not detected as closed is a common cause, as are water level or pressure faults. A technician checks which one.
Try one controlled power reset. If water remains, stop and book a diagnosis.
Access depends on space around it. Tell us about the setup and we plan the visit around it.
