Whirlpool Washers

From shared laundry rooms in apartment buildings to closets in flats, Whirlpool washers do the Bay Area's laundry in some tight spaces.

At a glance

Overview

Laundry in San Francisco rarely happens in a spacious room. It is a hallway closet in a flat, a shared basement room in a building, or a stacked pair squeezed into an alcove. Whirlpool washers are common in all of these, and the setting shapes the faults: crushed hoses behind a tight cabinet, a standpipe that is too low, a floor that is not quite level. Here is how we look at them.

Which washers we service

Our library covers mostly top-load machines, all 27″ wide: WTW4855HW, WTW5010LW, WTW5015LW and WTW5105HW are listed as top load. WTW5057LW and WTW8127LC are top load 2-in-1 removable agitator washers. WTW7120HW is listed as top load smart 5.3 cu ft. The Cabrio top-load models are WTW6400SW, WTW6800WE1 and WTW8500DR.

Front-load is represented by WFW5620HW, a 27″ front load washer that is no longer sold new. Compact front-load washers, all-in-one washer-dryers and stacked laundry centers also appear in our code library, so we look after those formats as well.

Finding the model label

On most top-load washers the label sits under the lid, on the inner rim or the back edge of the cabinet top. Front-load washers usually carry it inside the door opening, on the door rim or the frame behind the gasket. Photograph it and keep the photo ready.

What breaks and why

Washer fills but will not spin

Possible causes include an unbalanced load, a lid switch that is not engaging, a drive problem, or a pump that has not finished draining. Our article Whirlpool washer not spinning sorts them by what you hear and see.

Water stays in the drum

A clogged drain filter on a front-loader, a kinked drain hose, or a pump obstruction keeps water in. Start with Whirlpool washer won’t drain.

Lid or door will not release

Locked-lid problems are covered in Whirlpool washer lid locked, which explains what to note before booking.

Smell, shaking and noise

Musty front-loaders usually need gasket and filter attention; read Whirlpool front-load washer smell. Banging during spin often comes from a uneven load or an unlevel floor, as in Whirlpool washer off balance.

Display codes

For top-load washers our library includes dLO, where an item in the load may be keeping the lid from locking, and drn, a long drain. For front-load washers, F22 is listed as a front door lock issue, F20 as a water inlet problem and F21 as a drain problem. Stacked units use short codes like E1 for a water level that was not reached. See Whirlpool washer error codes for the broader list.

Installation points that change the diagnosis

The standpipe height, the way the drain hose is seated, hot and cold supply hoses that are reversed or kinked, and a front-load machine that sits on an uneven floor can each mimic a failed part. In stacked or closet laundry, the machine is hard to pull forward without damaging hoses, so tell us how much clearance you have. Some laundry rooms in older buildings have long wooden floors that flex during spin; mention that if shaking is the complaint.

Owner checks from the outside

  • Check the plug, the breaker and that both water valves are fully open.
  • Make sure supply hoses are straight and the drain hose is not kinked or pushed too far down the standpipe.
  • Redistribute a bunched load and avoid washing a single heavy item alone.
  • On a front-loader, clean the gasket and the drain filter, with a towel ready for the water.
  • Write down the code and try one controlled power reset.

Do not remove the cabinet, reach into a moving drum or bypass the lid switch. If water reaches electrical parts or you smell burning, switch off at the breaker.

Booking

When the checks do not solve it, use our Whirlpool washer repair service. A technician diagnoses before repairing, you get a written estimate, and nothing is repaired without your approval.
