Whirlpool Ranges

A freestanding range is the workhorse of a Bay Area galley kitchen, and its faults often come from the oven control, the igniter or the door latch.

At a glance

Overview

In many San Francisco flats the range stands between two counters with barely a hand’s width on each side. That tight fit, along with gas lines and an anti-tip bracket at the wall, means a range is serviced differently from a free-standing refrigerator. This overview explains the Whirlpool ranges in our library and the checks that are safe before you call.

The ranges we service

Our library lists four 30″ ranges. WFE515S0JS is a freestanding electric 5.3 cu ft range. WFE525S0JZ is the same type of range and is a current model. WFG525S0JZ is a freestanding gas 5.0 cu ft range, also current. WGE745C0FS is an electric double oven range. Anyone who has a different Whirlpool range will still get the same approach; the label tells the technician what it is.

If your cooking is split across a separate cooktop and oven, see Whirlpool cooktops and Whirlpool wall ovens.

Finding the label

On a range the model label is usually on the frame around the oven opening, hidden when the door is closed, or on the edge of the storage drawer frame when the drawer is pulled out. Open the oven door fully, look along the side of the frame, and photograph the label.

Oven complaints

Oven does not heat or heats unevenly

An electric oven may have a failed element, a sensor problem or a control issue; a gas oven adds the igniter and the gas valve. See Whirlpool oven not heating.

Door will not unlock after cleaning

A latch or door switch problem can leave a door locked. The related code, F05, is described as a possible problem with the door latch assembly, the door switch or the wiring.

Burner clicking or surface elements failing

Constant clicking at a gas burner often means moisture or debris at the ignition point; read Whirlpool gas burner clicking. On electric models with a smooth top, Whirlpool glass cooktop element not heating is the relevant guide.

Codes on ranges

The range codes we have verified include C81, C82 and C83, where the surface cooking area has overheated and the automatic shutoff was activated. F01 and F02 point to the oven temperature sensor, the control or the wiring, while F03 and F04 relate to the electronic oven control. Write the code exactly as shown. The summary guide is Whirlpool range error codes.

Installation details that matter

A range should be secured with its anti-tip bracket, and a gas model depends on a correct gas supply and shutoff valve behind or beside it. A range pushed too far back can pinch a gas connector or a power cord. In older buildings, outlets and gas shutoffs may be in awkward spots. Tell us if the range was recently moved or the kitchen was remodelled.

Safe checks

  • Check the breaker for an electric range, and that the plug is fully seated if the cord is accessible.
  • For gas, confirm the gas valve handle is parallel to the pipe, which is the open position, and keep burner ports clean and dry.
  • Close the oven door firmly and look for any item caught in it.
  • Wipe spills away from the burner and cooktop surface when it is cool.
  • Note the code, then try one controlled power reset.

If you smell gas, leave at once, do not touch switches and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Burning smell or sparks: switch off at the breaker. Do not touch gas fittings.
