Whirlpool Refrigerators

Two groups of Whirlpool refrigerators show up in Bay Area kitchens and in-law units: compact undercounter units and bottom freezer models.

At a glance

Overview

A Whirlpool refrigerator in San Francisco often lives in a place that makes service harder than the unit itself deserves: a galley kitchen in a flat, a pocket kitchenette in an in-law unit, or a cabinet opening in a condo where the fridge sits tight against the wall. This guide covers the Whirlpool refrigerators we work on, how to read the label that identifies them, and what to look at before you book a visit.

The refrigerator lineup we service

The refrigerator models in our library fall into two groups, and the difference between them matters for diagnosis.

Compact refrigerators

These are the small units used under counters, in offices, in guest rooms and in secondary kitchens: WH27S1E, WH31GE, WH31S1E, WH40S1E, WH43RS1E, WH43RS2E, WH43S1E, WH43S2QE and WH46TS1E. Each is listed as a compact refrigerator.

Bottom freezer refrigerators

The larger family-kitchen models listed as bottom freezer refrigerators include WRB322DMB, WRB551WNBS, WRFF3136SB, WRFF3336SB, WRFF3536SV, WRFF3736SV, WRMF3336SV, WRMF3536SV, WRMF3636SV and WRMF3736SV.

If your refrigerator is a French-door, side-by-side or top-freezer Whirlpool that is not named here, we still diagnose it; the model label tells us what we are dealing with.

Finding the model label

The label is usually on the inside wall of the fresh-food compartment, near the top or along a side, or on the door frame. On compact units it is often on the inside wall too, or on the back of the cabinet where a pulled-out unit shows it. Take a clear photo of the label in good light, then read the model line aloud or type it out before you call. Our short guide on how to find a Whirlpool model number shows the usual spots by appliance type.

What goes wrong most often

  • Warm food compartment while the freezer feels fine. On bottom freezer models this often points toward airflow between the two sections or the defrost system, which a technician inspects before anything is replaced. Read more in Whirlpool refrigerator not cooling.
  • Water on the floor or under the crisper drawers. A blocked defrost drain, a loose supply fitting or a cracked water line can all produce the same puddle. Our article on Whirlpool refrigerator leaking water walks through the order of checks.
  • Ice maker stops producing. A closed supply valve or a kinked line behind a flush-fitted refrigerator is common in tight San Francisco kitchens. See Whirlpool ice maker not making ice.
  • Clicking, buzzing or rattling. Sounds come from fans, the compressor area, or a cabinet touching a wall. Details are in Whirlpool refrigerator clicking noise.

When the display shows a code

The codes in our library for refrigerators run from short ones such as E1 and E2, listed for undercounter refrigerators, to the F-and-E pairs listed for bottom-freezer models, for example F1E1 and F3E1. For these the published guidance gives reset steps and does not name a cause, so we do not guess at one; we write the code down and let the diagnosis decide. A full overview sits in Whirlpool refrigerator error codes.

Safe first steps before you book

  1. Confirm the unit has power: the plug is seated, the outlet works and the breaker has not tripped.
  2. Check the door closes fully and the gasket is clean and not folded under.
  3. Clear anything blocking the vents inside, and keep food from pressing against the back wall.
  4. Look at the water supply valve and the line behind the cabinet for kinks, if the unit has an ice maker or dispenser.
  5. Write down any code exactly as shown. If you try one controlled power reset, note whether the code returned.

Do not remove back panels, work near the sealed cooling system or cut open insulation. If you smell burning or see sparks, switch the refrigerator off at the breaker.

Booking a refrigerator visit

Everything described above leads into our Whirlpool refrigerator repair service. A technician diagnoses first, you receive a written estimate, and nothing is repaired until you approve it. Having the model label photo, the code and a note of what you already tried makes the first visit far more useful.
